Overview:

Tarangire National Park, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, is one of Tanzania’s hidden gems, offering a truly authentic safari experience. Located in the Manyara Region, just a short drive from Arusha, the park covers approximately 2,850 square kilometers, making it the sixth largest national park in Tanzania. Tarangire is renowned for its stunning landscapes, ancient baobab trees, and an impressive concentration of wildlife, particularly during the dry season.

Distinct Features:

The park’s landscape is characterized by its namesake, the Tarangire River, which winds through the park and serves as a vital water source for the region’s wildlife. During the dry season, from June to October, the river attracts thousands of animals from the surrounding areas, creating one of the highest concentrations of wildlife outside of the Serengeti ecosystem. The park is dotted with massive baobab trees, which stand as silent sentinels over the vast savannah, adding to the park’s unique and picturesque scenery.

Wildlife:

Tarangire National Park is famous for its large elephant herds, with some groups numbering up to 300 individuals. These gentle giants can be seen digging for water in the dry riverbeds or seeking shade under the sprawling baobab trees. In addition to elephants, the park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and an array of herbivores such as wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, and giraffes. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, boasting over 550 bird species, including the striking Kori bustard and the vibrant yellow-collared lovebird.
