Overview:

Mahale Mountains National Park, located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, is one of Tanzania’s most remote and breathtakingly beautiful destinations. This park is renowned for its population of wild chimpanzees, offering one of the best primate tracking experiences in the world. The combination of lush forested mountains, crystal-clear waters, and white sandy beaches creates a truly unique and idyllic setting.

Distinct Features:

The Mahale Mountains rise dramatically from the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Africa’s deepest and second-oldest lake. The park’s terrain is a mix of dense tropical forests, bamboo thickets, and open woodlands. The lake itself is a natural wonder, with its clear, pristine waters home to over 250 species of fish found nowhere else on earth. The park is only accessible by boat, adding to its sense of exclusivity and adventure.

Wildlife:

Mahale is most famous for its population of over 1,000 wild chimpanzees. Visitors can embark on guided treks through the forest to observe these fascinating primates in their natural habitat, often witnessing them grooming, feeding, and playing in close proximity. In addition to chimpanzees, the park is home to other primates such as red colobus, red-tailed monkeys, and yellow baboons. The park’s birdlife is equally impressive, with over 350 recorded species, including the fish eagle and the colorful Peter’s twinspot.
