Overview:

Gombe Stream National Park, though Tanzania’s smallest national park, is world-famous for its connection to the groundbreaking primate research of Dr. Jane Goodall. Located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Gombe is a narrow strip of mountainous terrain, covered in lush tropical rainforest. This park offers an intimate and rare opportunity to observe wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

Distinct Features:

Gombe’s terrain is a mix of steep valleys, forested hills, and riverine vegetation, with the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika providing a stunning backdrop. The park’s small size allows for close encounters with wildlife, particularly the chimpanzees that have been studied here for over 60 years. Gombe’s remoteness and limited access ensure that it remains a serene and unspoiled haven for both wildlife and visitors.

Wildlife:

Chimpanzees are the star attraction in Gombe Stream National Park, and visitors can participate in guided treks to observe these incredible animals as they go about their daily lives. The park is also home to several other primate species, including olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, and vervet monkeys. Birdwatchers will appreciate the diversity of avian species, with over 200 species recorded, including the African fish eagle and the jewel-like Fischer’s lovebird. The crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling and swimming, with a chance to spot colorful cichlid fish.
