Ruaha National Park
Ruaha National Park
Ruaha National Park is the park where game viewing begins the moment the plane touches down. This national park is one of the few of Tanzania’s famous wilderness areas where the tourist can have a rare experience of game viewing spiced up by the fascinating landscape.
The park is rich in plants and animals such as the Greater Kudu which can not be found in any other national park other than Ruaha. The park boasts of an almost untouched and unexplored ecosystem, making the visitors’ safari experience new and unique. The Great Ruaha River just like the other rivers namely, Mwagusi, Jongomero, and Mzombe are the lifeline of the park. During the dry season, these rivers become mostly the main source of water for wildlife. Few natural springs are serving the same purpose. In the peak dry season, the elephants obtain water from dry sand rivers using their front feet and trunks. The remaining waterfalls along the Great Ruaha River are also an important habitat for hippopotamus, fish, and crocodiles.
Best Time to Visit
Ruaha National Park offers great wildlife viewing all year. Even so, the dry season from June to October gives the best chance to see large mammals. During this time, animals gather around water, so sightings become very easy. Meanwhile, the months from November to July work well for bird lovers. Many species arrive then, and the park turns into a colourful birding haven.
How to Get There
You can reach Ruaha National Park by road or by air. In addition, several scheduled and chartered flights operate from Arusha, Dodoma, Kigoma, and Dar es Salaam. These flights land at either Msembe or Jongomero airstrip. If you prefer road travel, the park sits about 130 km from Iringa and roughly 625 km from Dar es Salaam. Because the access roads stay open throughout the year, the trip remains smooth in every season.
