3-Days Mount Oldoinyo Lengai Trek
3-Days Mount Oldoinyo Lengai Trek
Known as the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is an active volcano and one of Tanzania’s most dramatic and sacred natural wonders. Located in the Rift Valley near Lake Natron, it’s the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, which is cooler and more fluid than other types. This 3-day trekking experience is ideal for adventurous travelers seeking a physically challenging climb, cultural immersion with the Maasai, and stunning views over the vast Rift Valley and Lake Natron.
The climb typically begins just before midnight to reach the summit by sunrise, where you’ll witness breathtaking panoramic views and possibly volcanic activity. This trek is best suited for fit and experienced hikers due to its steep and demanding terrain.
3-Days Mount Oldoinyo Lengai Trek
Day 1: Arusha to Lake Natron – Journey into the Rift Valley
Your adventure kicks off with a drive from Arusha to the remote Lake Natron region, located deep within the Great Rift Valley. Along the way, you’ll travel through dramatic volcanic landscapes and pass traditional Maasai villages, offering a glimpse into local culture. Upon arrival in the afternoon, settle into your camp or lodge with views of Mount Oldoinyo Lengai in the distance. You can enjoy a light walk around Lake Natron, famous for its flamingos and striking alkaline water. After dinner, get some rest in preparation for the night climb ahead.
Day 2: Midnight Climb and Summit of Oldoinyo Lengai
Around midnight, you’ll be transferred to the base of Mount Oldoinyo Lengai to begin your night ascent. Accompanied by an experienced mountain guide, the trek takes between 5 to 7 hours along a steep, rugged trail. The effort pays off as you reach the summit just in time for sunrise. From 2,962 meters, the views are spectacular—stretching across Lake Natron, the Great Rift Valley, and even toward Mount Kilimanjaro on clear mornings. You may also witness volcanic activity from the unique natrocarbonatite lava vents. After sunrise, descend carefully back to the base and return to your accommodation for rest and a hearty meal. In the afternoon, you can choose to visit a Maasai village or hike to the beautiful Ngare Sero waterfalls.
Day 3: Lake Natron Exploration and Return to Arusha
After breakfast, take a final stroll along the shores of Lake Natron or enjoy a refreshing dip near the waterfalls if you missed it the previous day. You’ll then begin the return journey to Arusha, taking in the dramatic landscapes one last time. Arrive in the late afternoon, concluding your unforgettable Oldoinyo Lengai trekking experience.
