Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park is Africa’s largest National Park with a staggering size of 30,893 km. It hosts one of the world’s largest concentrations of wildlife. The collection of wildlife both in diversity and abundance is just remarkable! Visitors to this vast sanctuary will be able to see the astounding volume of the wildlife of both rare and common species.
The park hosts the famous ‘’Big Five’’ and some rare species of antelopes like Roan Antelope, Brindled Gnu, roan, sable antelopes, Kudu, etc. The Nyerere National Park is graced by the Rufiji River and abundant wildlife, including the Big Five, and scenic landscapes. In addition to hosting large concentrations of elephants, buffalos, hippos, and crocodiles, it is also home to a vast variety of other games, including zebras, giraffes, and rare species of antelopes. A large variety of birds, including the kingfisher, can be found in the sandbanks off the oxbow lakes and channels of the Nyerere National Park.
Best Time to Visit
Nyerere National Park follows a bimodal rainfall pattern. Short rains arrive in November and December, and the landscape dries slightly in January and February. After that, long rains begin and continue until early May. Because of these clear seasonal shifts, visitors can plan their trips around either lush or dry conditions.
How to Get There
You can reach the park by road or by air. From Dar es Salaam, the drive to the main gate through Kibiti covers about 250 km. In addition, several flights operate from Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, and Arusha. These flights land at various small airstrips inside the park. As a result, travellers can choose the transport option that suits their schedule.
