Saadani National Park
Saadani National Park
Saadani National Park is the only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa where animals have direct access to an Indian Ocean beachfront. Saadani possesses all the attributes that make Tanzania’s tropical coastline and islands so popular with local and international nature lovers. Yet it is also the one place where those idle hours at the beach might be interrupted by an elephant strolling past, or a lion coming to drink at the nearby waterhole! On a game drive to Sadaani, you can see a surprisingly wide range of grazers and primates. You will get to see giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, common waterbucks, reedbucks, hartebeests, wildebeests, red duikers, greater kudus, sable antelopes, yellow baboons, and velvet monkeys.
Best Time to Visit
Saadani offers great wildlife viewing just after the rains. January and February are ideal because the plains still hold water and animals stay inside the park. The dry stretch from June to August also works well for game viewing. As a combined bush-and-beach destination, Saadani is enjoyable for most of the year. However, travel becomes less appealing during the heavy rains from April to May.
How to Get There
You can reach Saadani National Park from Dar es Salaam by road. The first part of the journey follows a smooth tarmac route for about three hours and covers roughly 160 km through Chalinze to Mandera village. After that, a 65 km rough road leads to Mvave Gate and the park headquarters.
Another option is to travel via Bagamoyo. In addition, charter flights operate from Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Arusha, Zanzibar, and several other major towns. Because of these choices, visitors can select the route that fits their plans best.
