Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park stands as the most iconic destination for a Tanzania safari. Located in northern Tanzania, it borders Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve. Together, the Serengeti–Masai Mara ecosystem forms one of the world’s oldest and most intact wildlife regions. As a result, it supports a huge variety of species found almost nowhere else.

Across the vast plains, grasslands stretch to the horizon and teem with life. Massive herds of wildebeest roam here, and predators follow closely. Moreover, lions, cheetahs and spotted hyenas hunt these herds throughout the year. Consequently, the Serengeti offers some of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife encounters.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is the park’s signature event. Rather than a fixed route, the migration is a continuous search for food and water. In addition, the calving season drives much of this movement. Each year, an estimated 100,000 calves are born in a six-week burst, usually from late January to mid-March. Therefore, predator activity peaks and photographers flock to the plains to witness the action.

Best Time to Visit

Wildlife viewing in the Serengeti stays excellent throughout the year, and each season offers a different experience. From November to mid-August, immense herds move across the plains during the Great Migration. River crossings, predator activity, and dramatic scenes unfold across the ecosystem during this period. Additionally, the calving season from December to March brings nonstop action as thousands of newborn animals attract lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. For many travelers, these natural events mark one of the best times to visit Serengeti National Park.

During the dry months of June to October, animals gather around shrinking water sources, which makes sightings consistent and rewarding. In contrast, the green season delivers lush grass and bright skies, creating ideal conditions for photographers. Since every season offers a unique experience, the Serengeti remains a truly year-round safari destination.

How to Get There

Travelers can reach the Serengeti by air or by road. Several flights operate from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Kilimanjaro International Airport to airstrips such as Seronera, Kogatende, and Ndutu. Daily scheduled services make the journey convenient, while charter flights provide extra flexibility for guests who prefer private travel.

Driving is another practical option. The journey from Arusha to central Serengeti takes about six hours and passes through open landscapes and Maasai communities. A second route starts in Mwanza, a city near Lake Victoria, and leads toward the park’s western corridor. Visitors traveling from Kenya can cross through the Isebania or Sirari border posts and continue for roughly three hours before entering the Serengeti. With multiple travel options available, reaching the park is straightforward for most itineraries.
