This day trip takes you to the stunning Shira Plateau, one of the oldest volcanic calderas on Mount Kilimanjaro. Located at an altitude of approximately 3,600 meters (11,800 feet), the Shira Plateau offers breathtaking views, unique vegetation, and a chance to explore Kilimanjaro without a full climb.

Itinerary:

• Morning:
  • Depart from your accommodation early in the morning (around 7:30 AM) for a scenic 2-hour drive to the Londorossi Gate (2,250 meters/7,382 feet) on Kilimanjaro’s western side.
  • Register with the park authorities and enjoy a short briefing about the trail.
• Late Morning:
  • Drive further into the park to the starting point at Moram Barrier Gate (3,400 meters/11,155 feet).
  • Begin your hike through the beautiful moorland zone, surrounded by endemic plants like giant lobelias and groundsel.
• Midday:
  • Reach the Shira Plateau, a vast open plain formed by volcanic activity, offering spectacular views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance.
  • Explore the plateau, visit its unique lava formations, and learn about its geological history.
• Afternoon:
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch on the plateau while soaking in the serene environment.
  • Start your descent back to Moram Gate.
• Evening:
  • Return to Londorossi Gate and transfer back to your accommodation, arriving by late evening.
